Sawyer is Three Weeks Old!
Happy Birthday to Sawyer! We got really good news today when we went to A Mother's Gift. He weighs 7 lbs!!! We are so excited! The constant feeding appears to be working! I'm scheduled to go back on Wednesday for another consultation, though, because when I nursed today and they weighed him it appeared that he was only eating an ounce from me. We are supplementing with the expressed breastmilk, but he's eating way more from the bottle than he should at this point. The best-case scenario would be for him to get strong enough to eat all 19 ounces from me each day. That's how much milk babies should get in order to gain weight. That way we would faze out the bottle except for every now and then and I would only pump to have some milk in the freezer. I would only pump four times a day instead of seven like I'm doing now.
I'm kind of frustrated with Loyette the lactation nurse at the pediatrician's office. I called when I got home today to tell her that he's at his birth weight and to ask them what I should do next. Candy at A Mother's Gift said that we could move to feeding him every three hours, but that I needed to continue to pump each time. Loyette's nurse called me back and said to keep doing what we're doing and have him weighed in a week and to call if anything changes but otherwise they'll see him at his two month appointment. I feel like five weeks is a long time for us to pretty much be on our own with Sawyer given how slow-going the breastfeeding has gone. I can't decide if maybe Loyette is taking this approach because she knows I'm going to A Mother's Gift or what. Oh well, we'll just do what Candy says and check back in with her on Wednesday.
I definitely missed Lorne today on his first day back at work. I found that I needed another set of hands and he's always such good moral support too. Our routine is for me to feed Sawyer, then I pump, and while I'm pumping Lorne feeds him his bottle. Without Lorne I had to feed Sawyer, feed him his bottle, put him to sleep, and then pump. I missed one pumping today so I have to be more careful about that in the days to come because I don't want my milk supply to suffer. I have to constantly remind myself to focus on him and leave the housework and other mundane things until Lorne gets home. He gets the short end of the stick, though, because he has to work all day and then come home and help me. I think he's a really good sport about it all though.
Our nighttime schedule changed a little bit too. Lorne stayed up and did the 11:45 feeding and I went to bed a little earlier so that I could wake up at 2:45 to feed him. We have been REALLY lucky so far in that he sleeps between feedings. He only wakes up when he's wet. He cries like crazy when that happens, but for some reason he doesn't cry when he's dirty. I think I would do the opposite if I were him, but who knows?
We had some visitors today. Aunt Net, Uncle Greg, and Tracy stopped by. Aunt Net is on vacation this week and they were on their way to Canton. Tracy held him the most. She had the swinging and rocking down. Those are Sawyer's favorite things to do that's for sure. Aunt Net fed him his bottle. She thinks that he looks like Mark. I'd have to agree. However, he reminds me of Lorne sometimes, but I don't think I've ever looked at him and seen myself.

It was love at first sight for Aunt Net!

Sawyer was very alert for Tracy. He looked at her for a long time!
We haven't gotten to take the three week bear picture yet because he's sleeping on his Daddy, but I will post it as soon as I can!
